Hard-shell vs soft-shell: what’s actually different?

A hyperbaric chamber does two jobs regardless of format. It holds a raised, sealed pressure around you, and it delivers oxygen to a mask or cannula while you’re inside. Hard-shell and soft-shell are two different ways of engineering that same pair of jobs, and the shell material is the root of nearly every other difference on this page, from the pressure ceiling to the footprint to the price. Hyperbaric HQ sells both formats. Atlas One and Altura One are hard-shell chambers, and Aria is our soft-shell entry chamber. Neither is a downgrade of the other. They’re built for different rooms, different budgets, and different reasons someone wants a chamber in their life. This page compares the equipment honestly, not to steer you toward the more expensive option.

What is a hard-shell chamber, and who is it built for?

A hard-shell chamber is a rigid pressure vessel, usually 304 stainless steel, with a sealing door and a viewing window. The rigid shell is what lets it hold a higher, steadier pressure than a fabric shell can. Atlas One is built to hold 1.5 to 2.0 ATA, and Altura One, our lay-down format, holds 1.3 to 2.0 ATA. At the top of that range, 2.0 ATA is roughly the pressure you’d feel about ten metres underwater. The steel body is what makes reaching and holding that pressure possible, session after session, rather than as a one-off.

The oxygen side scales with the shell too. Both Atlas One and Altura One ship with Standard Oxygen, continuous-flow delivery at 93 to 97% purity, and both offer Advanced Oxygen, the BIBS built-in breathing system, as an upgrade to close to 100% effective delivery at the mask. A soft-shell can’t currently take that upgrade, more on that below.

A hard-shell chamber is also a fixed installation. Atlas One’s footprint is 0.87 by 2.00 metres, and it’s built to pass through a standard doorway; Altura One’s is 0.90 by 2.20 metres. Most homes install without incident, and genuinely difficult access, including any job that needs a crane, is quoted separately rather than assumed as standard. This is the format for someone who already has the room worked out, plans to run sessions most days for years, and wants both the higher pressure ceiling and the option to step up to Advanced Oxygen later.

What is a soft-shell chamber, and who is it built for?

Aria is our soft-shell chamber, a fabric shell built around an internal metal frame that holds its shape under pressure, sealed with a triple-zip closure. It’s sit-or-lie, single size, 220 by 70 by 110cm. The fabric shell is the direct reason it tops out lower than a hard-shell. Aria’s pressure ceiling is 1.3 to 1.5 ATA, selectable at order across three tiers, roughly the pressure of three to five metres of water across that range.

Aria’s oxygen delivery is Standard Oxygen only, face mask or nasal cannula. There’s no Advanced Oxygen upgrade path on a soft-shell today; the sealed BIBS mask setup is currently a hard-shell feature. Where Aria wins outright is footprint and install. It’s a plug-in setup, no structural work required, and it packs down if you move house or move it to a different room. Lead time runs around 12 weeks. Hardware starts from AUD 16,700, delivered and installed, against Atlas One’s AUD 72,340. That’s the format for someone in an apartment or a smaller room, someone testing whether the daily habit sticks before committing to a larger build, or anyone for whom portability and the lower entry price matter more than the pressure ceiling.

What’s the honest trade-off?

Three things move together with the shell material, and it’s worth being straightforward about all three rather than just the one that happens to favour whichever chamber you’re already leaning toward.

Pressure ceiling. A rigid steel body holds a stable pressure a fabric shell can’t currently match, that’s simply what the material allows. If the pressure ceiling itself is the reason you’re buying, a hard-shell is the only format that reaches 2.0 ATA today.

Oxygen delivery. Standard Oxygen ships on every chamber in the range. Advanced Oxygen, the BIBS upgrade, is currently hard-shell only. If sealed, near-100%-purity delivery matters to you specifically, that upgrade path exists on Atlas One and Altura One and not yet on Aria. Footprint and commitment. A hard-shell is a fixed, delivered installation, built for a room you’re not planning to move out of soon. A soft-shell is portable and reversible. None of this makes one chamber better than the other in the abstract. It makes them suited to different rooms, budgets and buyers. The table below sets the two side by side on equipment facts only, so you can weigh it yourself before anyone gets on a call with you.

What should actually decide your pick?

Work through these in order, and the answer usually settles itself before you reach the last one.

  1. Measure the room. If you have a fixed spot with standard doorway clearance and you’re not moving soon, a hard-shell is on the table. If you’re in a rental, a small apartment, or a room that does double duty, Aria’s plug-in, no-structural-work install is the more practical starting point.
  2. Set the budget honestly. Aria starts from AUD 16,700; Atlas One from AUD 72,340; Altura One from AUD 78,830, all delivered and installed. If the gap changes your answer, it’s a real input, not something to talk yourself past.
  3. Decide how much the pressure ceiling matters to you. 2.0 ATA on a hard-shell versus 1.5 ATA on Aria is a real equipment difference. If you don’t yet know whether that ceiling matters to you, that’s a fair thing to bring to the call rather than guess at alone.
  4. Check the oxygen delivery you want. Standard Oxygen ships on both formats. If Advanced Oxygen, the BIBS upgrade, is part of the plan, that currently means a hard-shell.
  5. Be honest about your time horizon. A hard-shell is a long-term fixture. A soft-shell is a lower-commitment way to find out if a daily chamber habit is actually going to stick for you before you build around it.

Which one should you choose?

If you already have the room, want the higher pressure ceiling, and want the option to step up to Advanced Oxygen later, a hard-shell, Atlas One or Altura One, is the more direct route to that. If you’re working with a smaller space, a lower entry budget, or you want to prove the daily habit out before committing to a fixed installation, Aria is a legitimate, fully specced chamber built for exactly that brief, not a compromise version of the hard-shell range.

Common questions
Can a soft-shell chamber reach the same pressure as a hard-shell?

No. A soft-shell chamber's fabric shell tops out lower than a rigid steel vessel can hold. Aria reaches 1.3 to 1.5 ATA, selectable at order. Our hard-shell chambers reach higher at the top of their range. Atlas One holds 1.5 to 2.0 ATA, and Altura One 1.3 to 2.0 ATA. The shell material sets the ceiling.

Does Aria support the Advanced Oxygen (BIBS) upgrade?

Not currently. Aria ships with Standard Oxygen only, delivered by face mask or nasal cannula. The sealed BIBS mask upgrade is available on Atlas One and Altura One, our hard-shell chambers, not on the soft-shell range.

Is a soft-shell chamber a cheaper, lower-quality version of a hard-shell?

No, it is a different format built for a different brief. Aria trades pressure ceiling for portability, a smaller footprint, and a plug-in install with no structural work. It is a fully specced chamber in its own right, not a compromise version of the hard-shell range.

Which chamber fits best in an apartment or a smaller room?
